Our History
In 1948, a group of 28 professionals, in
Berea, Ohio, dedicated to the advancement of the personnel
profession formed the American Society for Personnel Administration
(ASPA), now known as the Society for Human Resource Management
(SHRM). As ASPA became more nationally recognized they relocated
its headquarters to Alexandria, VA where it currently maintains
a close and watchful influence on legislative issues that
come from Washington. SHRM prides itself on being the leading
voice of the human resource profession and represents the
interests of more than 160,000 professional members around
the world.
Locally, in 1989, under the direction of
chapter president, Tom Toaddy, the chapter renamed themselves
to The Greater Lake County Chapter of SHRM. In 1999, the growth
of the chapter was now including Geauga county hence the chapter
again renamed themselves more accordingly to The Lake/Geauga
Area Chapter of SHRM.
